Format: Electronic Toy
Country of origin: Spain
Bilingual Journey’s Age Recommendation: 5 and up.
Description: Magus Enciclopedia is an electronic toy (approximately 14” by 10”) that is a fun and challenging way for older children (independent readers) to learn about the world and expand their vocabulary. The player matches the word with the corresponding picture, placing an electronic pointer in the spot next to each one. When the player is correct, he is rewarded with a beeping sound, when he is incorrect there is no response. The game includes 30 sheets of theme-linked pictures and words, with more than 740 questions. Some of the themes include space, monuments, civilizations, animals, dinosaurs, cartoon characters, music, trees, flowers, rocks and minerals, sports, the human body, geography, and many, many, more. The game requires two AA batteries, not included.
Our comments: The Magus Enciclopedia is a wonderful toy for older children, and a fantastic way to maintain interest in Spanish for children who might otherwise think that the only fun toys are in English! We like that so many themes are presented that it is always easy to find something appealing for children of different ages and different interests. We lowered the age range significantly from what the manufacturers recommended, however, with the younger children some parental assistance might initially be helpful.
On a side note, the cover and the instructions present this toy as if it rewarded correct answers with a voice saying "ok!" and this is simply not the case, as the manufacturers have informed us. In any case, the beeping seems to be sufficiently rewarding to children.
